Young Mariners ready for exciting Hartlepool United test

South Shields are bidding to book a place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup for the first time on Friday when they take on Hartlepool United at Mariners Park.

The winners of the tie will face the tantalising prospect of a trip to Fulham in round three, with Shields looking to go one better than last season, when they were beaten at this stage by Lincoln City.

South Shields 4-0 AFC Rushden and Diamonds: Gilchrist at the double in Trophy win

Jason Gilchrist scored two and set up another as South Shields booked their place in the third qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy with a comfortable 4-0 victory over AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

Gilchrist was joined on the scoresheet by Adam Thurston and Lee Mason on a day which ensured the Mariners would at least equal their best run in the competition since reforming in 1974.
